A myofibril consists of a linear chain of sarcomeres. Sarcomeres are the smallest functional unit of a muscle fiber. They are composed of precisely organized proteins referred to as thick filaments and thin filaments. When these filaments slide past each other, the sarcomere contracts. Z lines mark the boundaries between adjacent sarcomeres. Within a sarcomere, thick filaments are found in the A band. Thin filaments extend through the I-band and into the adjacent zones of thick and thin filament overlap.
