The ovaries are the female gonads located on either side of the uterus. Ovarian follicles are small vesicles that contain an ovum, or egg, at various stages of development (oogenesis). A Graafian follicle consists of a fluid filled cavity (antrum) containing a mature egg surrounded by granulosa cells. Usually, only one follicle reaches maturity each month. During ovulation this follicle bursts, releasing the egg into the fallopian tube.
