The gestational period of a developing fetus is divided into three trimesters lasting three months each. During the first trimester, organogenesis (or organ formation) occurs. By the second trimester, the organs complete their functional development while the fetus experiences rapid growth. In the final trimester, the largest weight gain is observed while the rate of fetal growth slows down prior to birth. An infant born 1 – 2 months early has a reasonable chance of survival.
